A birth doula is a compassionate woman, knowledgeable in childbirth, who offers emotional and practical support to the mother (and her partner) before, during and just after the birth.
Her role has often been described as “mothering the mother”.
The doula is employed primarily by the woman to listen, support and respond to her needs. Having a baby is an intensely personal and emotional experience. As a doula I don't in any way want to replace a partners love and support, but I offer emotional and practical support to the couple which enables a partner to participate at their comfort level. Partners and doulas are able to work together very well and enhance the birth for all involved.
A doula is not a medical professional and she does not perform clinical tasks, diagnose medical conditions or give medical advice. She is there to offer unbiased, evidence based information, to support the woman in the decisions she makes and to offer continuous care to both mother and her partner from early labour until after the birth.
I am happy to support a mother wherever or however she plans to give birth - home, birth centre or hospital; and have experience supporting parents planning first births, subsequent births, VBAC's and caesarean births and hospital inductions.
